The development of the printing press and the steam train technologies were both world-changing inventions. Moveable Type Studio’s educational program offers the opportunity to explore innovative thinking and to look creatively at both the past and the future while situated at this unique heritage site.
About Moveable Type Studio
MTS is a mobile, 40-foot shipping container studio bringing traditional letterpress and relief printmaking to schools, cultural institutions, and regional communities across Australia.
This travelling design studio:
- Encourages hands-on, kinaesthetic learning.
- Connects students with heritage and storytelling.
- Merges craft, design, technology and history to spark creative thinking.
In August–September 2025, MTS is in residence at the Queenland Museum Rail Workshops, delivering a pilot schools program that integrates archive-based research, design challenges, and printmaking.

About the Pilot Program
Secondary schools are invited to collaborate with Moveable Type Studio and the Queensland Museum Rail Workshops to:
- Explore historical archives and research railway heritage.
- Develop creative design responses based on historical narratives.
- Create relief printing plates, culminating in a public print activation at the Galvanized Festival on 7th September 2025).
Curriculum Links: Visual Arts, History, Design & Technologies, and STEM — suitable for middle and senior secondary students.
